I did a B.Tech-M.Tech. dual degree in civil engineering from IIT Kanpur (2005-2010). After that, I worked as a structural design engineer at L&T (for 1 year) and as an assistant research professor at IIT Gandhinagar (for 6 months) before joining Central Soil & Materials Research Station (CSMRS) as a scientist in June 2012. Almost after a year, in July 2013, I joined the PhD program at IIT Delhi in the department of civil engineering (while continuing to work as a scientist at CSMRS). After defending my PhD thesis in September 2019, I joined the University of Brussels (ULB, Belgium) as a postdoctoral researcher in November 2019. I worked there for about 2 years and finally joined IIT Mandi as an assistant professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering in November 2021.
My professional experience spans consulting firms (including short-term engagements with AECOM and COWI), government R&D organizations, international research institutions, and multiple IITs, providing a broad perspective across academic, research, and applied engineering domains.
My research focuses on improving our knowledge about structural dynamics through the lens of fractional calculus and uncertainty quantification. Over the years, I have worked on topics such as random vibrations, earthquake engineering, rock mechanics, blast load uncertainties, and vibration control of smart structures. At IIT Mandi, I established this research group in February 2022 to explore applied mathematical problems in structural dynamics and uncertainties, with a growing emphasis on fractional-order modeling and analysis. Our goal is to bridge theoretical developments with engineering practice by developing simplified, yet powerful, analytical and computational tools.
We welcome motivated students and collaborators interested in exploring how fractional calculus can enrich modern dynamic modeling and control in structural engineering. Students/researchers who are willing to collaborate/work on some interesting problems of dynamics may contact me directly at shashank@iitmandi.ac.in or shashankpathaks@gmail.com .
